Bhopal is the capital city of Madhya Pradesh. It was the seat of the erstwhile princely state of Bhopal before Independence of India. Bhopal was ruled by wives (Begums) of the Nawabs of Bhopal.
The modern city of Bhopal was established by Dost Mohammed Khan, an Afghan soldier in the Mughal army, when he build the fort in Fatehgadh. The princely state was ruled by four Begums – Qudsiya, Sikandar, Shah Jehan and Kaikhusrau Jahan. The last Nawab was Hamidullah Khan, who ruled till 1947, after which the state of Bhopal was annexed to the Union of India in 1949.
Geographically, the city is located between the Vindhya and the Satpura mountain ranges, and has an uneven terrain. Within its territories, there are several hills – Idgah, Shyamala, Arera and Katara – and lakes. Bhopal has several man-made and natural lakes and is also called the City of Lakes. The Upper Lake, the Lower Lake and Shahpura Lakes are famous among the locals.
Bhopal has a humid tropical season. Which means that the summers are hot and dry, winters are chilly and also devoid of humidity. The monsoon season in Bhopal arrives in the mid June and the last showers are experienced till late September and early October. The best season to visit Bhopal is from the onset of Monsoon to mid-March.
